What Is Future Value?

Future Value (FV) tells you how much your money will be worth at a specific point in the future, given a rate of return. It’s the opposite of Present Value.

If Present Value asks “What is tomorrow’s money worth today?”, Future Value asks “What will today’s money be worth tomorrow?”

The Future Value Formula

FV = PV × (1 + r)^n

For regular contributions (annuity):
FV = PMT × [(1 + r)^n – 1] / r

Where:
– PV = Present Value (initial investment)
– PMT = Regular payment/contribution
– r = Interest rate per period
– n = Number of periods

The Power of Compound Interest

Albert Einstein reportedly called compound interest the “eighth wonder of the world.” Here’s why:

Years R50,000 at 5% R50,000 at 10% R50,000 at 15%
5 R63,814 R80,526 R100,568
10 R81,445 R129,687 R202,278
20 R132,665 R336,375 R818,327

The difference between 10% and 15% over 20 years is staggering — that’s compounding at work.

Why Future Value Matters for African Investors

Retirement Planning

Calculate exactly how much your pension fund contributions will grow by the time you retire.

Education Savings

With tuition fees rising, FV helps you estimate whether your savings plan will cover future education costs.

Business Planning

Forecast the value of retained earnings or reinvested profits over your business planning horizon.

Practical Example

Invest KES 50,000 today with KES 5,000/month contributions at 10% annual return for 15 years:

FAQ

Q: What’s a realistic rate of return to use?
A: For African stock markets, historical averages range from 8-15%. For savings accounts, 3-7%. Always account for inflation.

Q: How often should I compound?
A: Monthly compounding is most common for investments and savings accounts. The more frequent the compounding, the higher the future value.
