How Discounts Are Calculated
Simple Discounts
A straightforward percentage off the original price:
- Original: R1,000, Discount: 30%
- Saving: R1,000 × 0.30 = R300
- You pay: R700
Stacked Discounts
"Extra 10% off sale items" sounds like 40% off (30% + 10%), but it's actually less:
- After 30%: R1,000 × 0.70 = R700
- After extra 10%: R700 × 0.90 = R630
- Effective discount: 37%, not 40%

Common Discount Traps
Inflated Original Prices
Some retailers inflate the "original" price before a sale. If a R500 item is always "on sale" at R350, the real price is R350.
Minimum Spend Requirements
"Get R200 off when you spend R1,000" means you must spend R800 more than planned to save R200. Only worthwhile if you needed R1,000 worth of items anyway.
Bundle Deals
"Buy 2 get 1 free" is essentially a 33% discount, but only if you need all three items. Buying two unnecessary items to get one free isn't saving — it's spending.
Percentage vs Fixed Amount
- 20% off a R100 item = R20 saving
- R50 off a R100 item = R50 saving
Always calculate the actual rand/shilling/naira amount saved, not just the percentage.
